Director, Publications and Platform

SPIE (www.spie.org), the international society for optics and photonics, was founded in 1955 to advance light-based technologies. Today, SPIE serves 257,000 constituents from 173 countries through interdisciplinary information exchange, continuing education, publications, patent precedent, and career and professional growth.

SPIE publishes the SPIE Digital Library, the world’s largest collection of optics and photonics applied research with more than 500,000 papers from SPIE conference proceedings and presentations, journals, and eBooks. Research spans biomedicine, communications, sensors, defense and security, manufacturing, electronics, energy, and imaging.

The Director, Publications and Platform is responsible for driving business strategy and innovation across the SPIE suite of publications activities including proceedings and conference content, journals, books, and multimedia. Primary responsibilities include directing SPIE’s conference content acquisitions and development strategy; ensuring that SPIE’s publications activity connects to SPIE’s events activity; and managing SPIE Digital Library product and platform development strategy.

The Director, Publications and Platform is also responsible for directing and overseeing SPIE’s publications editorial, policy, and production operations; shaping and executing departmental goals and strategies; handling copyright, ethics, and legal matters, related to publications; and working with publications and Society staff and volunteer leadership to ensure the future success of SPIE publications.

Education & Experience Requirements
Candidates must have experience working within a not-for-profit STM organization with a minimum of 10 years of experience in publishing management and 5 years of direct supervisory duties. Ideal candidates will have experience working with conference-to-publications processes and digital library platform creation. Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent required, Master’s or PhD preferred.
