Electrical Engineer 4 (Monitoring & Control Systems)

Alpha Technologies, which provides world-class powering solutions, seeks a Monitoring and Control System Hardware Engineer (Electrical Engineer 4) for its Hybrid Power Systems team in Bellingham, WA.   


Alpha’s hybrid power systems principally integrate photovoltaic and utility power inputs, energy storage (batteries), and various power conversion elements for achieving a wide variety of end user powering objectives.  This position requires you to conceptualize data transfer from existing lower level device microcontrollers to supervisory system controllers to remote, networked user interfaces and back. You will be responsible for defining system communication busses, embedded computing hardware, and networking hardware to achieve necessary data throughput and management.


You will also need to closely collaborate with, and at times, coordinate power system and software development teams to achieve fully integrated, functioning systems and may be required to provide technical supervision to lower level engineers/technical personnel.



Responsibilities:

  • Design electrical or electronic subsystems within overall hybrid power systems by conceptualizing, defining, and communicating a data exchange environment (device operating systems, communication interfaces, communications protocols, data attributes) for hybrid power systems consistent with market/application objectives and structured for compartmentalized (i.e. modular) development re-use  

  • Evaluate released product designs and propose significant cost reduction/functional improvement changes

  • Coordinate/conduct all necessary qualification and verification testing required for proposed designs or design changes to prove system architecture ruggedness and specifications are met

  • Propose technical solutions to requests/problems from other departments and write change orders to effectively implement solutions;

  • Provide technical solutions to customer requests for modified standard products; write software, hardware, and interface specifications based on application requirements

  • Troubleshoot issues encountered in system verification and/or customer product implementation

  • Communicate and coordinate design information/design/code reviews with other design team members

  • Serve as Project Engineer for system development projects coordinating contributions from electrical, mechanical, and software teams

  • Coordinate contract resources to fulfill hybrid power systems data transfer and supervisory control specifications

  • Code firmware and software solutions to fulfill hybrid power systems data transfer and supervisory control specifications

  • Create project documents and manage design per Alpha’s ISO based procedures; define and document system architecture and specifications utilizing. Utilize ‘Best Practices’ in code structure, commenting, and documentation





Requirements and Skills:


Education:   BSEE/BSEET, BS Computer Engineering or equivalent military training    

   

Experience:  Minimum of 6 years in field of electrical systems, electronics, hybrid energy systems or software/firmware development. In particular, embedded systems, programming, or development of equipment controllers and user interfaces


  • Excellent record of attendance

  • Ability to speak/read/write English

  • Detail oriented with strong organizational skills

  • Work well under pressure

  • Good communication and team work skills

  • Broad knowledge base in embedded systems

  • Familiarity with inner workings of multiple operating systems Unix (iOS, Linux), MS Windows

  • Proficient in multiple programming languages

  • Working experience with CAN, Modbus, SNMP application protocols

  • Strong understanding of TCP/IP model layers

  • Hands-on electronics lab interactive development and troubleshooting skills

  • Ability to work cooperatively in a highly motivated team environment

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Be hands on in planning and conducting system level testing to verify system specifications and validating systems meet application needs.  



PC Application Skills:

Basic level:  PowerPoint, Outlook, Visio

Intermediate level: Word, Excel, Project


Other: Experience with Altium or equivalent and CAD (Autocad or equivalent)


Development experience using Raspberry PI and BeagleBone platforms, MATLAB utilization experience, schematic drafting proficiency using Altium and LabVIEW programming proficiency are all desirable.



Desirable:

  • Knowledge of UL/CSA electrical safety requirements and approval process

  • EMC testing experience

  • Experience using an automated MRP system

  • Knowledge of alternative energy technologies

  • Experience developing embedded system control software and user interfaces

  • MSEE or MSCE

  • Power electronics background/education

  • Experience with integration of photovoltaic electric energy  

  • Experience with UPS and battery charging technology
