Applications Engineering Manager

OutBack Power Technologies, a member of the Alpha Group, seeks an Applications Engineering Manager for its facility in Arlington, WA. This person will manage the Application Engineering team ensuring quality support of our internal and external customers. Additional responsibilities include employee training, technical document review, technical support escalation, customer and partner training and resources planning. You will support customers and sales staff with renewable energy system designs, layout drawings, product quotations and application technical information and act as the lead resource for complex engineering problem solving.


• Leads Application Engineering team and resources
• Provides guidance, best practices, and support to application engineering teams
• Prioritizes and assigns projects such as application notes, system drawings, creation of training material, and lab work in conjunction with sales department
• Travels domestically and worldwide as needed, assists sales with sales meetings, conducts product training, visits installation sites, and troubleshoots issues
• Manages and trains team to act as backup to technical support
• Monitors and submits material, either directly or via team, to the forums and knowledge base libraries
• Represents the Application Engineering department in management meetings
• Recruits, hires, and mentors team members
• Works with sales, either directly or through team members, to respond to inquiries, product sales and technical materials, and provides drawings

Requirements and Skills:
Education: Bachelor Degree or equivalent military training in electrical engineering or related

Experience: 4 - 6 years in solar electric and renewable energy system design with strong emphasis on customer interaction, electrical design or support experience, and a working knowledge of both grid-tied and off-grid renewable energy systems.

Supervisory: 2 - 4 years

• Excellent attendance record
• Ability to speak/read/write English
• Detail oriented with strong organizational skills
• Work well under pressure
• Current driver’s license and acceptable driving record
• Sufficient credit line for business expenses
• Available weekends and after hours when on call
• Strong communication, planning, and organization skills
• Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and to set own priorities
• Flexibility to respond to a varying workload
• Professional and ethical in dealing with customers and vendors
• Ability to obtain a passport and to travel independently

PC Application Skills:
Basic level: Adobe, Project
Intermediate level: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Visio, CAD
Advanced level:

Travel Requirements: Expected 10 - 25%
